Dr. Wayne Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home at 10:00 o’clock a.m. prior to the service to visit and speak with friends. Sherrill was born in Johnston County, NC, September 14, 1923. He was raised outside of Benson, NC, on a tobacco farm. After high school he worked the shipyards in Newport News, VA, building the aircraft carrier the USS Yorktown. In April 1943, he was drafted into the US Army. He served in New Guinea in a field hospital as a surgical technician. Sherrill was awarded the Bronze Star after service in New Guinea. He was one of the first troops to enter Tokyo, Japan, where they set up a field hospital. He left the Army in 1946. Sherrill was a devoted husband to the late Reba Reeves Johnson, formerly of Kershaw, SC, a father and employee. He worked for Progress Energy for 37 years. His love of the Lord was evident in all areas of his life. Having had the opportunity of singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and serving as a deacon for many years was truly a blessing to him. Sherrill was known to his friends and staff at Brookdale and the Summit in Charlotte as the “Southern Gentleman”. His love of fishing really paid off two years ago as he caught the “big one”; a 10 lb+ bass, and he and the fish were on WBTV’s Al Conklin’s “Catch of the Day”. Sherrill is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Chuck Northcutt; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Laurie Johnson; grandchildren, Alexa Estevez, Caitlin Johnson, Angela Woods and Bradley Northcutt; nephews, Max Johnson, Rev. Fred Johnson and Danny Johnson; nieces, Sara Flowers and Patricia Sanderford and three great grandchildren, Alanna Woods, Ashton Woods and Abigail Northcutt.
