Ruby Diana Gay Williams, 98, of Kershaw, S.C., passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 21, just 4 days shy of her 99th birthday at her home. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Gay and Lula Sowell Gay. She retired from Springs Industries. “Miss Ruby “as she was affectionately called loved to work. On any given day you may see her in her yard or riding her golf cart around the pond. One of her favorite pastimes was playing the mandolin. On Thursday nights she opened to the public a small building next to her home called Ruby’s Place. She along with other musicians from the area would come and play and sing. They enjoyed each other’s company as well as opening the doors to others for enjoyment.
She was married to Horace B. Williams, former Chief of Police for Kershaw, S.C., who predeceased her in 1990. In addition to her parents, she is also predeceased by her son, Steve Williams; 3 brothers, Walter Gay, Ernest Gay and Curtis Gay and 2 sisters, Ethel Broughton and Marie Williams and 3 sons-in-law, Jim Gay, Harold Coates and Mitchell Reeves.
Those left to cherish her memory and love are 3 daughters, Carolyn Gay, Linda Coates and Barbara Reeves; her daughter-in-law, Rita Williams; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.
The family is receiving at her home. Mrs. Williams’s casket will be placed in the Pineview Baptist Church gymnasium, Monday, August 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. for those who wish to pay their respects.
A graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Pineview Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Hank Fanning and Preacher Cotton Pate will officiate. Burial will follow in the cemetery. Friends may speak to the family following the service in the cemetery.
