Ruby Gay West Oliver

Graveside services for Ruby Gay West Oliver, 91 will be held in the Brannon Cemetery, Bethune, at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 25, 2010. The Revs. Dr. Guy Oliver and Dr. Sue Arledge will officiate.

The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside and later at the home of her daughter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethune Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 125, Bethune, S.C. 29009.

Mrs. Oliver, widow of Harris Oliver died Friday, May 21. Born in Cassatt, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry Harmon and Fleda Crow West. She was predeceased by four sisters: Nell Hatfield, Claudia Wilson, Mittie Robinson and Margaret Freddie King; two brothers: John West and Roy West and two sons: Tim and Ken Oliver. She is survived by a daughter; Phoebe Oliver Huckabee, four grandchildren: Amy Jones, Lesley Dockweiler, Brett Huckabee and Craig Huckabee; five great granddaughters: Beth Pate, Megan Pate, Erin Jones, Paige Jones and Abbey Dockweiler; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Oliver and her late husband operated two family businesses in Bethune for 25 years: Oliver's Department Store and Oliver Motel. She was a member of Bethune Presbyterian Church. She led the Nursery and Children's Department for over 30 years, then opened her home for many years for a weekly Presbyterian Womens Bible Study Group. She will be remembered for her strong faith, love for her family and friends and for sending thoughtful notes of encouragement in her beautiful handwriting.
