Patricia Roberts Matthews, 73, passed away in Columbia on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Born on June 9, 1936, in her mother's hometown of Ruby, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Wade F. and Katherine Kate Sellers Roberts. Mrs. Matthews is survived by two sons, John H. Plott, Jr. and Daniel W. (Sheryl) Plott, and two daughters, Cherie (Mike) Nettles and Laurie Deedle Brooks Starnes, all of West Columbia, and ten grandchildren. Also surviving is an aunt, Nola Roberts Faulkenberry of Kershaw, and many cousins.
Pat grew up in Delray Beach, Florida, but came to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina, where she became head majorette and made many friends. She remained an avid Gamecock fan all her life. Pat studied journalism and obtained a degree in education. In addition to bringing up her children, she worked in several offices in Columbia, most recently as a loan officer for the Columbia Teachers Credit Union.
Pat was always cheerful and optimistic, even in the face of adversity, and could brighten anyone's day with her humor and gift of mimicry. She will be greatly missed.
