A funeral service will be held for Olin Edward Baxley on April 24th, 2012 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Kershaw, South Carolina. The family will receive friends at 1:00 PM in the church fellowship hall prior to the funeral. Interment will follow at Kershaw City Cemetery. Baker Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mr. Baxley died Saturday April 21st 2012 at home with his family. He was born in Kershaw, South Carolina on October 31, 1924 to Daniel Edward Baxley and Lola Huntley Baxley. He was predeceased by his wife Peggy Landrum Baxley, his mother and father, and his brother Harold Huntley Baxley. He is survived by his brother Daniel Carlyle Baxley (Kitty) of Camden, South Carolina, a son Michael Baxley (Brenda) of Marshville, North Carolina, daughters Gail Zwicke (Hal) of Atlanta, Georgia, Susan Johnston (Phil) of Columbia, South Carolina, and Lisa Nolan (Byron) of Florence, South Carolina. He is also survived by grandchildren: Rob Baxley, Landrum Johnston Knight (Ro), Samantha Johnston, Huntley Nolan, Lydia Nolan, Roma Nolan, and Philip Johnston, Jr. He is also survived by two nieces and seven nephews. Mr. Baxley served in World War II from 1943-1945. He served in the 103rd Army Infantry Division in operations throughout Europe. This division was instrumental in the liberation of the Kaufering concentration camp (a subcamp of Dachau). He graduated from Clemson in 1948 and married Peggy Landrum Baxley in 1949. He was a farmer in his early years and then worked for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was also a member of Abney Lodge 211 of the A.F.M. Throughout his life he enjoyed traveling, managing his land, and spending time at the mountain house he built for his family. The family wishes to express their absolute gratitude to his loving caregivers including: Kim Adams, Mildred Hefner, Linda Kelly, Shelia Love, Shelia McManus, Sambo Price, Judy Sinclair, Janice Snipes and Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services. They are also thankful for kind neighbors Brenda Kay Williams (Mike Borquez) and Sherie and Alan Russell. In addition, the family would also like to thank Hospice Care of South Carolina for their guidance and support. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 412 N. White Street, Lancaster, South Carolina 29720, First Baptist Church of Kershaw, or The Salvation Army.
