Funeral services for Odell Nick Lucas, 91, of Kershaw, will be held Sunday, July 22, at 3:00 o’clock p.m., in the sanctuary of Kershaw Second Baptist Church. The Revs. Ken Owens, Ronnie Hinson and Mr. David Shores will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery.
Mr. Lucas died Friday, July 20, at his home. Born in the Flat Creek community of Kershaw, he was a son of the late Ernest Boag Lucas, Sr. and Suelee Small Lucas. Mr. Lucas retired from E. I. DuPont Co. He was a faithful member of Kershaw Second Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and trustee. Mr. Lucas devoted his life from 1960 to 2015 working with Boy Scout Troop 74. He became the Scout Master in 1960. He received the following awards during his Scouting years, the Scouter’s Key in 1966, Palmetto Award 1968, Order of the Arrow 1971, Wood Badge 1972 and Silver Beaver Award 1977. He also attended Philmont Training and National Jamborees. Mr. Lucas received the Citizen of the Year award in 1981 from the Kershaw Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are his loving wife of 70 years, Ruth Byars Lucas; a son, Mitchell O. Lucas and his wife Allison; a daughter, Bridget L. Rhodes and her husband Wayne; 6 grandchildren, Nicki Jackson and her husband, Jeff, Amanda Lucas, Jennifer Royal, Clint Faile and his wife Melissa, Lindy Catoe and her husband Brannan and Ashley Holliday and her husband, Taylor; 15 great grandchildren and 4 great – great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Suzanne L. Roberts and Judy L. Hinson and her husband Crawford and sisters-in-law, Sally B. Blaich, Henri Lucas, Fran Lucas and Laney Lucas and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Thomas Lucas, Albertus “Tootsie” Lucas, Carl Lucas, Wayne Lucas and E.B. Lucas, Jr. and a sister, Lou L. Couch. The family would like to thank Mr. Lucas’s special caregiver, Barbara Cayruth for the love and compassion shown to him over the last 2 years.
The family will receive friends, one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 o’clock p.m. Sunday, July 22, in the church gymnasium and other times at the home.
