A graveside service for Melvin Sowell, 91, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 5, 2009 in Kershaw City Cemetery. Rev. Bryant D. Fersner will officiate.
Mr. Sowell died Sunday morning, May 3, 2009 in Springdale Healthcare Center, Camden. Born in Kershaw, he was the son of the late Samuel and Bertha Baker Sowell. He retired from Springs Industries and Archer Daniels Midland Co. as a mechanic. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Mr. Sowell enjoyed fishing and raising birds and was a US Army WWII veteran.
Surviving are his wife; Mary Jane West Sowell of the home, two daughters; Linda S. Faulkenberry and her husband Gene of Lancaster, Ann Boone and her husband Phillip of Kershaw, two sons; Larry Sowell and his wife Joann of Kershaw, Samuel Sowell of Florence, a special friend of the family; William Goins of Florence, five grandchildren; Tracie McCoy, Josh Faulkenberry, Amy Woodward, Heather Payne and Chris Sowell, five great grandchildren; Allen, Jacob, Trevor, Maranda and Caroline and a sister; Aline Catoe of Pineville, N.C. He was preceded in death by three brothers; Emmett Sowell, J.W. Sowell and Gene Sowell.
The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the cemetery.
