Lois Sherer Jordan, of Kershaw, SC, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, following a brief battle with cancer. She was 85 years old.
Lois was born August 20th, 1924, in Sharon, SC, the daughter of the late Samuel Moffatt Sherer and Rosa Lois Jackson. She is survived by her sister Clara Hilton of Kershaw, daughters Dr. Rosanne Hooks of Mullins, SC and Montine of New York, NY; sons Henry of Cleveland, OH and James of Kansas City, MO; nieces and nephews Ray Hilton, Beverly Hampe, Brenda Reiser and John Hilton and their families; and Beth Tyler and Judy Sherer and their families. Lois also had six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend L. Eugene Jordan, brothers Ray and Eugene Sherer, and niece, Sherer Ann Laney.
A graduate of Erskine College, Lois dedicated her life to the church. Alongside her husband Gene, she was a devoted ministers wife. They were first called to the Presbyterian church in Effingham, SC, then to Charlottesville, VA, and finally to Olivet Presbyterian Church in Staunton, VA, where they served their family and church for 25 years.
They retired to Kershaw, SC, in 1985, to be near Lois beloved sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Bill Hilton. With the passing of Gene shortly thereafter, Lois set about creating a new life for herself. She became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church spearheading efforts on the Building and Grounds Committee, volunteering at K.A.R.E., and in collaboration with Clara, initiating a series of projects to beautify the church interior. Lois had a way of getting things done. In addition, for nearly a decade, she played piano at the Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church. She dearly loved both church communities.
A talented seamstress, Lois door was always open. She enjoyed helping her neighbors with everything from simple alterations to last-minute wedding dress issues to creating the most complex window treatments. A gifted baker, Lois was known for delivering generous batches of her freshly-made rolls to all varieties of family gatherings and church events. An avid gardener, Lois could often be found tending her flowers. She also found grandmotherly joy in caring for the Davis children Katherine, Wilson and Bardin and in her relationship with the Mike Owens family next door. But as busy as Lois stayed with all of the above, nothing came before her love for her church and church community. Her life and faith were one.
Dearly loved by her family, and cherished by those who knew her, Lois can-do spirit and generous heart will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, January 23rd at the Kershaw First Presbyterian Church on Cleveland Street, with the Rev. Jesse Hegler and the Rev. Bryant Fersner presiding. Everyone is invited to continue the celebration of Lois life at a reception immediately following the service in the church social hall.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 611, Kershaw, SC, 29067, for the renovation of the church steeple the latest Building and Grounds initiative.
The family would like offer special thanks to Dr. Leland McElveen and the Oncology staff at KershawHealth in Camden, SC. Their kind and expert care was a source of tremendous comfort and assurance. The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude for the loving care provided by Alice Faye Singleton and Mildred Heffner during Lois final weeks. Their support and guidance, so generously offered, was truly heaven-sent.
