John M. Brewer, Jr., Md

John M. Brewer, Jr., M.D. ,91, passed away Thursday, January 17, at his home in Kershaw, SC. Born October 27, 1927 in Camden, SC. His was the son of the late John M. Brewer, Sr., M.D. and Gertrude McMahon Brewer.

Dr. Brewer graduated from Kershaw High School and was Valedictorian of his class. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University School of Medicine followed by specialty training in internal medicine and dermatology at Harvard University School of Medicine and Tulane University School of Medicine. He opened his first medical practice in Atlanta, GA and then later moved his practice to his hometown, Kershaw, SC until his retirement.

Dr. Brewer was a United States Army veteran who served in the infantry during WWII. He was a founding member of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Dunwoody, GA and attended Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church in Kershaw, SC. He was a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, South Carolina Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, North Carolina Dermatology Association, and Georgia Society of Dermatology. Although officially retired, he maintained his license to practice medicine until his death.

He is survived by his sons John M. Brewer, III, William F. Brewer, Darwin F. Brewer, and Claiborne M. Brewer and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by a half-brother, William Culvern Brewer and a sister, Jean Brewer Myers. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rae Marie Brewer.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Dr. John M. Brewer, Jr. will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Kershaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Bryant D. Fersner will officiate the service. Burial will follow at the Kershaw City Cemetery with the committal rites given by Rev. Dr. Huey Mills. Visitation will be at 12:30 to 2:00 prior to the funeral in the church fellowship hall.
