Jo Ann DeKany

Jo Ann DeKany, age 59, of Kershaw, S.C. passed away, Saturday, November 2, 2024, at her home. She was born on July 27, 1965, in Pequannock, N.J. to the late Richard Lewis DeKany and Margaret Verrall Kernaghan DeKany. Jo Ann was employed with the South Carolina Department of Corrections as a case worker in the Kershaw Correctional Institution. She always put others before herself. Jo Ann loved going to the beach, sitting by the pool and spending time with friends. She also enjoyed eating out, watching all types of sports and was a NASCAR fan. 

She is survived by her stepmother, Carol DeKany; 2 sisters, Patti DeKany and Lori DeKany-Leal; her brother, Richard DeKany; her stepsister, Linda Bundy; her stepbrother, John Birdsall; her companion, Shaw Whitlatch; his mother, Loretta Murray; his son, Shawn Austin Whitlach; special nephew, Jackson Leal; special niece, Isabelle Leal and her canine companion, Skip. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Verrall DeKany Smith.

A memorial celebration of life service will be held, Wednesday December 4th, 2024, at 12:00 noon in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton Street, Kershaw, S.C. The family will greet friends following the service at the funeral home.

The burial will take place in New Jersey.
