James Quay Powers, 91, of Heath Springs, S.C., passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at his home. Born in Heath Springs, S.C., he was a son of the late Clyde Vernon Powers and Mary Emily Horton Powers.
Mr. Powers was a graduate of Heath Springs High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Powers was employed with E. I. DuPont Co. with 38 1/2 years of service. He retired as a supervisor in the engineering department. He was a former member of Heath Springs Baptist Church, where he served on the renovation committee in 1993 and a deacon. He later joined Kershaw Second Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Family Life Center Building Project in 2005. He also served on the pastor search committee and served as a deacon. He enjoyed horses, rabbit hunting, fishing, gardening, farming and the outdoors. He also was a trainer and handler for beagles in the National Championship race in 1996.
He is survived by 3 children, Deborah “Debbie” Craig of Lancaster, S.C., Karen McKinney and her husband, Danny of Columbia, S.C., and Gregory “Gregg” Powers and his wife, Liz of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Michelle Craig, Westley McKinney and his wife, Caroline, Andrew McKinney and his wife, Emily, Robert Powers and his wife, Abby, Lane Powers and Jake Powers; great grandchildren, Graham McKinney, Hayden McKinney and Parker McKinney and 2 brothers, John Lewie Powers and his wife, Ann of Marietta, GA. and Earl Powers and his wife, Lynn of Heath Springs, S.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Jean Threatt Powers and his second wife, Miriam Annie Williams Powers, a brother, Edwin Powers and a sister, Dorothy Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 15, 2022, in the sanctuary of Kershaw Second Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. Jason Moss, Pastor Westley McKinney and Ronnie Hinson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery, Heath Springs, S.C. with military honors.
The family will receive friends, prior to the service on Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at the church.
