James L. Moreland, Sr.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of James L. “Jimmy” Moreland, Sr., 68 of Kershaw, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Kershaw Second Baptist Church. Rev. Jesse Hegler will officiate. A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, February 16, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Hall from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m which will serve as a visitation. Mr. Moreland died suddenly Thursday, February 13, at Springs Memorial Hospital, Lancaster. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late James Claude “J.C”, Jr. and Rena “Reedy” Byars Moreland. Mr. Moreland was a graduate of Kershaw High Scool Class of 1962, graduated from The University of South Carolina and received his masters degree from Winthrop University. He retired from Central High School after 34 years of teaching. He also taught after his retirement at Andrew JacksonHigh School for 4 years and was currently teaching at York Technical College, Kershaw Campus. Mr. Moreland had served as past director of Leroy Springs Recreation Department and a former Lancaster County School Board member. Mr. Moreland was very active with the youth of the community serving as swim team coach and teaching many youngsters to swim. He had served as past Scout and Cub Scout Master and Committee member for Troop 74. He was also a certified instructor in CPR for the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Mr. Moreland was a member of First Presbyterian Church having served as Elder, Sunday School teacher and was active with the youth of the church. He also served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Mr. Moreland also received the Kershaw Citizen of the Year Award. Surviving are his wife; Frances Blake Moreland of the home, a son; Lee Moreland, a daughter; Karen Moreland and her companion Ben Faulkenberry, a granddaughter; Brook Peavy, a grandson; Justin Peavy and a great granddaughter; Bella Stroud. Also surviving are 2 sisters; Karen Martin and her husband Tony of Lancaster and Lynn Childers and her husband Jantzen of Union, a brother-in-law; Buddy Gosa of Spartanburg, aunts and uncles; Ruth and Nick Lucas, Dot and Arthur Smith, Sally Blaich, Yvonne Byars, Camilla Moreland and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his special 4 legged friend; “Dee Dee”. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, Post Office Box 611, Kershaw, S.C. 29067 or the Kershaw Community Park Council, Post Office Box 83, Kershaw, S.C. 29067.
