James Curtis Gainey

James Curtis “Curt” Gainey, age 84, of Bethune, S.C., died Monday evening, January 13, 2020, in Kershaw Health, Camden, S.C. Born in Bethune, S.C., he was a son of the late James R. Gainey and Annie Lucille Cassady Gainey. Mr. Gainey owned and operated Gainey’s Grocery for 18 years. He also had worked for the Kendall Co. and later retired from the SC DNR. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, golfing and hunting. Mr. Gainey served in the United States Air Force for 4 years and was an avid Carolina Gamecock fan. He was a past member of Lynchwood Masonic Lodge # 197 where he had served as Worshipful Master and was a member of Woodmen of the World. He also served on the Bethune Town Council for 12 years.

A service to remember his life will be held, Thursday, January 16, 2020, at 3:00 o’clock p.m. in Timrod Baptist Church where he was a member. The Revs. Jeremy Ussery and Jackie Knight will officiate. Inurnment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Gainey was married to the late Grace Eubanks Gainey who preceded him in death on March 2, 2014. He is survived by 3 children, Burton (Christy) Gainey, Jenny Gainey and Derrick (Christina Selle) Gainey; 3 grandchildren, Hannah, Chase and Jack; a brother, Glenn (Kathy) Gainey; 2 sisters, Iris (Bobby) Draft and Joan (Donnie) Horton and a special sister-in-law, Silveree Gainey. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Baker and a brother, Thomas L. Gainey.

The family will receive friends following the inurnment in the church Fellowship Hall.
