Irvin Eugene “Gene” Blackmon, age 96 of Rock Hill, S.C. and formerly of Heath Springs, S.C., passed away Thursday morning, November 9, 2023, in Piedmont Medical Center, Fort Mill, S.C. Born in Heath Springs, S.C., he was the son of the late Irvin Bynum Blackmon and the late Naomi Alva Bowers Blackmon. Mr. Blackmon retired from the United States Postal Service. After his retirement he was a funeral assistant with Mahaffey Funeral Home, Lancaster, S.C. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and he enjoyed living at North Myrtle Beach for 14 years with his wife, before moving to Rock Hill, S.C.
He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Imogene Ogburn Blackmon of Rock Hill, S.C.; 2 children, Michael E. Blackmon and his wife, Carol Ann of Greenville, S.C. and Pamela B. Whitley and her husband Keith of Clover, S.C.; 3 grandchildren, John Whitley and his wife, Melissa of Clover, S.C., Daniel Blackmon and his wife, Alyssa of Easley, S.C. and Willis Whitley and his wife, Jessica of Clover, S.C. and 6 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Erskine B. Blackmon and sister, Melba Cooper.
A service of remembrance will be held Sunday afternoon, November 12, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in Heritage Hall at Westminster Towers, 1330 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, S.C. Rev. Jamie Burdette, Assistant Pastor for Senior Adults at First Baptist Church, Rock Hill, S.C. will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the end of the service.
Mr. Blackmon will be laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Heath Springs, S.C. with only the family in attendance.
Memorial remembrances may be directed to First Baptist Church – Senior Adult Fund, 481 Hood Center Drive, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730, or the charity of one’s choice.
