Funeral services for Helen Blackmon Phillips, 78, will be held Friday, April 16, at 4:00 p.m. at Sand Hill Heights Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Lanny Brisendine, Nelson McCloud, and Rev. Charles Miller will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 15, from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at Sand Hill Heights Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Sand Hill Heights Baptist Church, Post Office Box 96, Elgin, SC 29045.
Mrs. Phillips died Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Born in Heath Springs, she was the daughter of the late J. Hunter and Bertha Couch Blackmon. She was formerly employed with Springs Mills and Olympia Mills. She had retired from Wal-Mart. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Sand Hill Heights Baptist Church where she served as director of W.M.U., choir member, taught the 5 9 year olds Sunday School Class and former youth teacher. She was devoted to her family and her church. Mrs. Phillips would pick up children from her neighborhood and carry them to Sunday School so that they may be introduced to know Christ. She often commented that the children were the future of the church.
Surviving are her husband, Ben Irvin Phillips of the home; children, Glenn Phillips of Columbia, Ky, David Phillips of Elgin, Virginia McVickers of Monroe, NC, Timmy Phillips of Elgin, Patricia Jones of Elgin, Janice Harmon (Mike) of Blythewood; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Shehane, Julia Gainey, Marian Taylor, Elves Ray and Polly Meetze and brothers, Dan Blackmon and Alva Blackmon.
