Funeral services with Masonic Rites for Hazel Willard Phillips will be held Friday, October 28, at 1:00 p.m. at Bethune Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in Kershaw City Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Guy Oliver, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 27, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, Kershaw, SC. Mr. Phillips died at his home Tuesday, October 25. Born in Kershaw, he was the son of the late Boyd and Maggie Lee Terry Phillips. Mr. Phillips was retired from the Kendall Company, International Paper Company, and BBA Nonwovens. He was a member of Bethune Presbyterian Church, where he served as a former deacon, present church treasurer, and elder. He was a graduate of Kershaw High School where he played on the 1951 Kershaw High School State Championship Football Team and the 1953 Kershaw High School State Championship Baseball Team. He was also a member of the 1953 Shrine Bowl Team. Mr. Phillips attended Clemson University and was an active member of IPTAY for many years. He was a mason with Lynchwood Masonic Lodge # 97, Kershaw Masonic Lodge # 29, York Rites, and was lifetime member of Camden Shrine Club. He was a charter member of Jamil Temple. Mr. Phillips was also a longtime member of the Bethune Lions Club. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Nancy Baker Phillips; daughter, Beth Phillips Finch (Bryan); grandchildren, Matthew Bryan Finch and Zachary Baker Finch; brother, Edward “Snooky” Phillips (Bonnie); honorary daughter, Elizabeth Peters; nieces, Angela Neal, Melinda Williams, and Dr. Michelle Mayer; nephew, Robbie Robinson; sister-in-law, Sandy Baker Faver (Howard). He was predeceased by a sister, Bobbie Jean Phillips. Memorials may be made to Bethune Presbyterian Church, 206 N. Blackmon Street, P.O. Box 125, Bethune, SC 29009.
