Hazel Horton

Hazel Horton, 93, of Bethune, S.C., passed away at home Thursday, March 29th, 2012. Born in Chesterfield county, he was the second son of eleven children of the late Robert and Ella McPherson Horton. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Pacific Campaign of WWII. He was a charter member of the Jefferson VFW. Hazel was a lifetime farmer of Kershaw and Chesterfield counties. For many years he was a large watermelon and row-crop farmer. He was a board member of the Jefferson Watermelon Association and also served on the Farm Service Agency Board for many years. Hazel was a man who loved his family and friends. An avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, he could often be found out in the field on his tractor. He especially took pride in growing and sharing produce from his garden. He was predeceased by his wife, LaVerne Jones Horton, after 58 years of loving companionship. He is survived by three children: Lynnwood Horton (Sandra) of Bethune, Sanna Carrico (David) of Jefferson, and Carl Horton (Rhonda) of Camden and seven grandchildren: Russell Horton, Karen Benfield, Lauren Vargo, Dara Carrico, Carly Horton, Case Horton, Chloe Horton, and one great granddaughter: Ashley LaVerne Horton. He is also survived by five brothers and sisters. He will be remembered fondly by the many people whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 1, 2012, in Timrod Baptist Church , Bethune. Entombment will follow in the family mausoleum in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson. The Revs. James Wallace and David Robinson will officiate. The family will receive friends, Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m at Baker Funeral Home, Kershaw.
