Doris Bowers Ballard

Doris Bowers Ballard, the widow of James Elmer Ballard, died at her home on Sunday, November 20, 2011. Born May 2, 1921 in Marion, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Burney Birchmore and Stella Shaw Bowers. Mrs. Ballard was a member of Kershaw Second Baptist Church where she previously taught Sunday School . She was employed by Springs Mills and then by Jessie Crenshaw before becoming a homemaker. Mrs. Ballard is survived by three daughters, Susan Ballard of Kershaw, Lorraine (Doug) Angel of Easley, South Carolina, Melissa (Doug) Edwards of Charlotte, North Carolina and a son, Leslie (LuAnne) Ballard of Smithfield, Virginia. Mrs. Ballard had seven grandchildren, Matthew Angel, Brad Angel, Eric Gardner, Christa Gardner, Thomas Ballard, Brandon Ballard, and Andrew Ballard and one great-grandchild, Michael Grayden Funderburk; and a number of nieces and nephews. Also precious to her were her step-granddaughters, Yvette and Consuela Van Seters; also Ted Edwards and Katie E. Kruse. Predeceasing Mrs. Ballard was her husband of 52 years, an infant baby daughter, brothers, Woodrow and John Bowers, stepmother, Clodia Bowers Jones of Selma, Alabama, and a step-sister, Elizabeth Driggers of Selma, Alabama. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 22, 2011, in Kershaw Second Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. followed by burial in the Kershaw City Cemetery. The Revs. Jamie Rogers, Don Knight and Ronnie Owens will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Church Family Life Center from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. The family is grateful to Home Care and Hospice of Lancaster, especially to Mary Bowers.
