Clara Sherer Hilton, 93 of Charlotte, NC and formerly of Kershaw, SC passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Carmel Hills Retirement Center, Charlotte, NC. She was born in Sharon, SC on November 20, 1921, to the late Samuel Moffatt and Rosa Jackson Sherer. She graduated from Erskine College in 1942. On August 28, 1943, she married the late William S. “Bill” Hilton in Sharon. She taught in the Kershaw Area School System until her children were born and then became a homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Kershaw where she served in various capacities as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and was a member of the Virgie Estridge Circle. She also served her community by being a Brownie Scout Leader and a member of the King Alfred Garden Club. Mrs. Hilton was a talented seamstress, cook and avid gardener. She followed all sports, especially the South Carolina Gamecocks. Most importantly, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31, 2015, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Cleveland St., Kershaw. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Alan Arnold will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Sunday beginning at 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton St., Kershaw. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church – Building Fund, P.O. Box 611 , Kershaw, SC 29067. Surviving are four children, Dr. William Ray Hilton (Diane) of Charlotte, NC, Beverly H. Hampe (Tommy) of Chapin, Brenda Kay Hilton of Charlotte, NC and John Marvin Hilton (Kim) of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren, Jennifer L. Bowen, Michael Laney, Timothy Hilton, Dr. Amanda Linch, Kayla Hilton, Joseph Hilton, Polly Hilton, Claire Hilton and Jack Hilton; nine great grandchildren, Sarah, Jacob and Erin Laney, Richard and Harrison Linch, Zachary and William Bowen and Baxter and Cabot Hilton. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherer Ann Hilton Laney; two brothers, Ray Jackson Sherer, Moffatt Eugene Sherer and a sister, Annie Lois Sherer Jordan.
