Charles Carnes

A quiet corner of Westville now holds the echoes of a life well-lived as Charles Howard Carnes, a cherished husband, father, and esteemed veteran, gently departed this earthly realm on November 15, 2023, enveloped by the unwavering love of his devoted family. Born on October 27, 1942, to the late John Howard Carnes and Lottie Lula Killough Carnes, Charles crafted a life illuminated by steadfast dedication, industrious toil, and an enduring love for both his kin and the land he cultivated.

Embarking on the journey of life, Charles graduated from Lancaster High School, where dreams took flight and purpose began to shape. With the patriotic spirit coursing through his veins, he served his country with honor in the United States Air Force. Post-military endeavors saw him co-owning JH Carnes Machinery Company, and later, his skills found a home at Springs Industries. Yet, it was in the past 27 years that Charles discovered the harmonious rhythm of his true calling as a turkey farmer, working alongside his cherished life companion, Donna.

A maestro of the land, Charles devoted his days to the turkey farm, finding fulfillment in the gentle sway of the fields and the tender care of the animals he considered family. His affinity for Western pleasure and cutting horses painted his world with the hues of joy, and he reveled in sharing this passion with those fortunate enough to share in his presence.

In the tapestry of his existence, Charles found solace in life's simple joys. He loved fishing and hunting, especially rabbit hunting with his beagles. He loved spending time with all his family and friends. He never met a stranger. Donna, his partner in life for 38 years, became the heartstrings of his devotion. A loving father, Charles leaves behind a legacy carried by Charles Carnes Jr. (Peggy), Nina Efird (Gene), Robert Carnes, Stephanie Neal (Cory), Kelley Carnes, Melissa Powell, and Caroline Carnes.

The echoes of his laughter and wisdom continue through his grandchildren: Andrew Carnes, Katie Carnes, Courtney Efird, Gene Efird (Haley), Austin Carnes, Hannah Hampton, Taylor Neal, Savanna Carnes, Emily Williams, Hunter Powell, Lucas Powell, Garrett Moore, and great-grandchildren Emmy Efird and Aubry Efird. Charles is survived by his sister, Rosalind Grier (Wesley), and brother, Tony Carnes.

As Charles takes his leave from this world, he reunites with those who preceded him in death—his parents and one sister, Annie Laura Carnes. A celebration of Charles Howard Carnes' life will unfold on Sunday, November 19, at 2:00 pm at Bethany Baptist Church in Westville, SC. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in commemorating Charles at the conclusion of the service. His final resting place will be Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, overseen with care by Baker Funeral Home, Kershaw, SC.
