Mr. Leonard F. (Toby) Lowey, passed away at his home in Kershaw surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years, retiring as Chief Petty Officer, and received many medals and accommodations. He loved the Navy and was a true patriot. In the early 80’s he moved back to Kershaw. He loved to work in his shop where he built everything from birdhouses to beautiful furniture. He also loved to work on his tractors with his brother Harold. They even rebuilt a junked 1952 Farmall that was sitting in a field for many years. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, and Abney Masonic Lodge # 211 of Kershaw. Toby as everyone knew him, is survived by his wife, Eleanor Holmes (Ellie); daughters, Becky (Joe), and Ev (Mike); stepchildren, Beth (JT),and Jeff (Kelly); 5 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, 1 step-great-grandchild; 4 sisters, Lee Mangum, Jerry Williams, Maxine Baker, and Sue Neal; many nieces and nephews. Toby was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Roma Lowery and siblings, Ralph Lowery, Alma Catoe, Harold Lowery, Katherine McLemore, and Kenneth Lowery. Friends and family are invited for visitation at 12:00 noon Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Baker Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service with full military rites to celebrate his life at Baker Funeral Home. He will be buried at sea out of Norfolk, Va. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Kershaw County, 124 Battleship Road, Camden, S.C. 29020.
